How to exercise your creative muscles daily


During my primary school days, we had physical education classes twice a week. 

I still remember how Tuesdays and Thursdays were my best weekdays. We get to put on our sports wears, partake in coordinated exercises and also play freely on the school field.

As such I grew up knowing exercise to be the twice a week physical education class. No more no less. I enjoyed the sessions and always looked forward to them. 

You can rightly guess that although I exercised twice a week, I didn’t enjoy the benefits of exercising. I still wasn’t fit. 

Many of us treat their creative muscles like I did to my physical ones. They think they can get to their optimum  creative level out of the blue. 

The truth is all this leads to is unfitness for our creative muscles to carry on the creative activities we engage in thus resulting in flat tires along the way. 

You cannot expect great results to flank your work one time. 

You must work on it. 

You must try, fail and keep trying before you can hit the mark. 

You must practice. 

You must exercise. 

At that time I couldn’t play the full 90 minutes of a football game without gasping my way short of breath as the time tends to wind down. 

What I needed at that time was a daily exercise regime that would put my muscles in “ready to go” mood and develop them constantly. 

So also the creative muscles, in order to get consistent peak performance in your creative work be it writing, singing, painting or any other way works of art, you must exercise daily. 

Below are five ways in which you can do just that:

1. Brainstorm:

get a sheet of paper or open a new page on your favorite text editor and write anything that comes to your mind. This helps pour out your thoughts to page. How else would you get kick started on your ideas if you don’t get them out of your head? Having daily brainstorming sessions help you become more solution oriented. 

2. Connect:

the results of your brainstorming sessions are diverse and for you to produce great work through them, you must connect them. Look for ways in which one idea matches into or aids another. This alone would help you produce more creativity. 

3.Explore:

after brainstorming and connecting. You’ll find out that for some ideas or group of ideas you need further details in order to use them effectively. The best way to get that is by exploring through those ideas. Exploration is fun as it exercises the creative muscles of the explorer and produces deep adventurous solutions. How about that? 

4. Read:

you can count on reading to inspire you to produce great art on any day. I start my day with reading.  This is because it is the easiest way to exercise my creative muscles. It puts me into the world of the writer and helps me create better art day by day. You too can get your creative muscles up and running by reading daily. 

5. Do:

of all these ways in which you can successfully exercise your creative muscles, there’s none that beats doing. If you’re a writer, write; a singer, sing; a painter, paint. Just do it. Doing it is the best practice. Your best work is produced when you do it daily. Your creative muscles get stronger and stronger thus better.

Our creative muscles just like our physical bodies need daily exercise in order to get to and stay at peak performance. 

We can do that by solution seeking, connecting the dots, breaking new grounds and doing our work daily. 

Use this five fold process to be on top form in order to produce better work day by day.
